Examples of Good Service User Involvement in Adopted Studies

The adoption form requires you to detail service user involvement at each stage of the study – study development, conduct of the study and dissemination of results.  Please see below examples of adopted studies.

DISC study (SAPPHIRE programme)
Scale to assess experiences of discrimination
CI: Graham Thornicroft
Hubs: SL&SE

The primary aim of this study is to psychometrically validate a new instrument to measure mental health service user’s experiences of discrimination (DISC).

Stages of service user involvement:

Study development:  Co-director of SURE (Service User Research Enterprise) is a co-applicant on the programme.  Director of Research from Rethink (a service user/carer organisation) is a co-applicant on the programme.  A member of the research team is a service user and has been a carer. This person has been involved in the develoment of the study protocol and has done from a dual perspective as both a researcher and service user/carer.  A further member of the core team employed on the study also has personal experience of mental health stigma.

Conduct of the study:  The service user researcher will conduct a number of the research interviews in this study.

Dissemination of study findings:  General study findings will be made available to the service users who participate in the study.  We further aim to disseminate results in a range of publications suitable for service users and carer audiences

Recovery focussed self help therapy for psychosis: an evaluation of different modes of delivery and patient preferences
CI:  Christine Barrowclough
Hubs: North West

Stages of service user involvement:

Study development:  Two service user researchers are applicants on the trial.  A service user reference group consisting of an additional 3 service users with personal experience of using mental health services psychosis have provided consultancy for the development of this proposal, including detailed feedback regarding each specific study within the programme as well as overall direction.

Conduct of the study: We plan to have service users involved as researchers on two of the three studies with a total of 1.5 wte over the 4 years.  This study not only has service user researchers, it will also be co-led by a service user researcher.

Dissemination of study findings:  The reference group will be established for the whole programme (building upon the current one).  The reference group will consist of service user research staff and a panel of five local service users with experience of psychosis.  The reference group provides input to all studies at all phases of the research and involved in the dissemination activities.
