Tim Rawcliffe has been employed as service user development officer since January 2006 and previously served as the ‘service user representative’ on the North West Hub’s Advisory Board.
He is committed to the principle that individuals who have direct lived experience of mental health problems and difficulties have the right to have a voice in the design and delivery of health and social care services.
His role is to encourage and support individuals to become involved in mental health research – from commenting on the feasibility of potential research projects, advising on study materials through to the carrying out of research – and to provide guidance to academic researchers on how best to utilise the ‘insider’ knowledge that experience of mental health problems can bring to the research process. His work is supported by a panel of individuals from across the area covered by the hub, who provide knowledge and awareness of their localities.
He chairs the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)-funded programme ‘Recovery from Psychosis’ Service User Reference Group, and sits on the ‘PARADES’ Trial Steering Committee and Data Monitoring Committee.
He is currently a co-applicant on a Medical Research Council-funded research project to examine the impact of patient/public involvement on health research.

He was prinicipal investigator of A National Evaluation of Early Intervention in Psychosis Services: DUP, Service Engagement and Outcome – The National EDEN Project, funded by Department of Health. The project was successfully completed in 2010. He is now principal investigator of the SUstaining Positive Engagement and Recovery (SUPEREDEN) – the next step after Early Intervention for Psychosis.
